This month, the Ankeny Police Department is kicking off its “Dude, Where’s My Bike?” campaign in an effort to return stolen or misplaced bicycles in Ankeny.

Now through April 30, citizens can reclaim their missing bikes. To identify a bike, contact David Billings, Evidence Technician, at 515-289-5252.

The Ankeny Police Department has approximately 25 bikes that need to be reclaimed by their rightful owners.

To ensure you are not the next victim of bicycle theft, follow these simple tips:

  • Lock your bike – Lock it to the sturdiest object you can find. If there is not a place to lock your bike, lock a wheel to the frame to prevent someone from riding away with it. If you don’t have a lock, take off a wheel.
  • Use a U-lock or hefty bike chain – Cable locks can be cut quickly with bolt cutters or a hacksaw.
  • Write down the serial number and take a picture of your bike – This information could help you find your bike if it is lost or stolen.

At the end of the month, any bikes that remain unclaimed will be donated to theDes Moines Bicycle Collective.
