A child riding a bicycle was struck by a car on a dark and stormy Tuesday morning onDes Moines' south side.

Police, fire and an ambulance responded to a report that a child was hit by a car outside The Hawkeye Motel, 2701 Southeast 14th St., at about6:10 a.m. Tuesday. A small pink and green bike missing its front wheel could be seen on the sidewalk outside the motel.

Awoman outside the motel said she didn't see the child, who was riding in the street. Another larger child's bicycle was also laying just ahead of the pink bicycle.

Officers took a boy, about 11 to 14 years of age, from the pouring rain and into their squad car. It did not appear that he was wearing a helmet.

Sgt. Paul Parizek of Des Moines Police said that the struck child appears to have minor injuries.

Family of both children were being notified of the incident.

It's unclear what the children were doing riding their bikes so early in the morning during a thunderstorm.
