The city of Winterset will receive a grant of $500,000 from the DOT
State Recreational Trails Program to help move a historic bridge built
in 1911 to Cedar Lake.
The
Pratt three-truss steel bridge, currently locatedsoutheast of
Patterson, will be re-purposed as a bridge over a spillway currently
under construction at Cedar Lake as part of a city trail program. The
trails will run through the city of Winterset and around Cedar Lake,
while the bridge will connect the trails on either side ofthe spillway.
City officials say they also plan to connect these new trails to the
Metro trail system, allowing runners and cyclists a connection from
Winterset to Des Moines.
Total costs on the project, as well as an expected opening date, are
still to be determined. Officials say the first phase of the project is
to complete construction of the Cedar Lake spillway before spring rains
begin.
