The Neal Smith Trail reopened Friday after months of being under repair, according to an Iowa Department of Natural Resources news release.

Part of the Neal Smith Biking and Hiking Trail in Des Moines was closed Aug. 21 to repair a half-mile section of the trail that was at risk of being taken over by the Des Moines River.

Contractors stabilized the eroding stream bank that had been impairing the trail. They removed the trail material and used it to make the base of the new trail, officials said.
