Trail will honor longtime city manager Bob Layton, who served during a period of unprecedented growth in Urbandale.
A new trail honoring former city manager Bob Layton will run through
Walnut Creek Regional Park and connect to major streets as a result of
recent action by the Urbandale City Council.
The nearly $805,000 Bob Layton Trail will be a mile-long paved route that connects to Meredith Drive and Douglas Parkway, the Des Moines Register reported. Layton served as Urbandale’s city manager for 25 years, retiring in 2009.
The trail will serve as a major artery for cyclists, joggers and
walkers, said Scott Hock, Urbandale’s assistant director for parks.“It’s a great link within the city and within the park system,” he
said. “As we develop the regional park, everything will kind of stem off
that trail.”The new trail should be completed by year’s end.
Once
the trails through the park and one under construction on Meredith
Drive are completed, a loop will be closed linking them with trails on
156th Street to Hickman Road and on Douglas Parkway, and creating easy
access to the regional Raccoon River Valley Trail.
