A Tuesday morning accident that sent a bike rider to the hospital has also resulted in intoxicated driving and drug charges against the woman behind the wheel of the car.

Gene Edward Noble, 75, of Elk Run Heights, was riding south on the 18th Street Bridge when he was struck from behind by the car shortly before 10 a.m., according to Waterloo police.

Noble suffered incapacitating injuries, and Paramedics with Waterloo Fire Rescue took him to Covenant Medical Center.

The driver of the car, Maria Antoinette Franke, 59, of Waterloo, was arrested and charged with first-offense operating while intoxicated and possession of crack cocaine.

EARLIER STORY

WATERLOO, Iowa -- A male bike rider was injured in a collision with a car on the 18th Street Bridge Tuesday morning.

The unidentified biker was crossing 18th street just north of bridge when he was struck. The impact shattered the windshield and dented the roof of the car.

Police said he was wearing a helmet. He was transported to a Waterloo hospital by Waterloo Fire Rescue. The car driver was not injured.
