A $24,527 grant was awarded to the Nishna Valley Trails
(NVT) Association through the Cass County Foundation to be
used for an engineering study to create a linking trail from
Schildberg Quarry Park to the little league ball fields
along north Olive Street in Atlantic. This trail would serve
as a “backbone” from which to extend other trails into
Atlantic and as a potential connector for the T-Bone trail.
Atlantic mayor David Jones remarked, “These grants will help
provide some visible success in the development of the
trails system in Cass County and Atlantic. We hope that the
next phases of development will become easier after this key
segment is completed.” Officials of NVT pointed to the
success of the Audubon County Conservation Board in
completing their portion of the T-Bone Trail by beginning
with key segments that were later connected.
A second grant proposal for $46,800 has been submitted to
the Iowa Department of Transportation for consideration for
the Regional Transportation Enhancement program. This grant
will be used to study the best way to bridge Troublesome
Creek, which will be essential to extending the T-Bone Trail
from the current ending point in northern Cass County into
the city of Atlantic. NVT also received a gift of $1,000
from Deter Motors of Atlantic as a gesture of support for
the trail development.
The Nishna Valley Trails Association is a volunteer group
whose mission is to support the development of recreational
trails throughout the Cass and Audubon County region,
through sponsoring grant applications and through advocacy
in the community. The group hopes to have the engineering
studies completed by fall, and then develop a proposal that
can be submitted in the next granting cycle to obtain funds
for completing the T-Bone Trail into Atlantic.

participate as a volunteer contact Ed or Myra Kail at

association is scheduled for Tuesday June 8, at 6:00 p.m.,
at the city park in downtown Atlantic.
