A $226,000 grant was awarded to the City of Coralville to pay for phase five, part two of the Clear Creek Trail.
The funds will be used to extend the trail from the point at which Highway 965 (Coral Ridge Avenue) will eventually cross Clear Creek to Deer Creek Road.
Director of Parks and Recreation Sherri Proud said the segment is the second of a larger segment that will go from 25th Avenue to Deer Creek Road. She said the first segment beginning at 25th Avenue is expected to be bid for construction next fall. Bidding both parts of the segment at the same time remains a possibility, Proud said.
The trail will eventually connect Coralville with Tiffin, Kent Park, and the Amana Colonies, Proud said.
"It's very connective within and between our communities," she said.
The trail funds were part of $1.16 million in federal recreational trail projects awarded to five Iowa projects.
