Council Bluffs The 2008 Black Squirrel Triathlon in Council Bluffs was a huge success, according to the Council Bluffs Convention and Visitors Bureau. Participants from Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota tested their skills during the third annual event Aug. 23. The triathlon featured a 1,000-yard open water swim in Lake Manawa, a 21-mile bike route to the Iowa Western Community College campus on city trails and back, and a 6.2-mile run around Lake Manawa. Nearly 200 athletes, including 16 teams, participated in the triathlon. Awards were distributed to winners in male, female and team categories. "Thanks to the (Iowa Department of Natural Resources), the YMCA, the Parks and Recreation Department and the Council Bluffs Police and Fire departments for all their assistance," said Josee Beier of the Council Bluffs Convention and Visitors Bureau, also a sponsor. "We could not have had such a successful day without the help of our many contributors and volunteers. We really appreciate everyone's participation and look forward to another successful event next year." Other sponsors included the local amateur radio operators club, Jennie Edmundson Hospital First Aid Corps, Porter Tauke & Ebke and Hy-Vee Food Stores. Additional sponsors include Target, Walmart, Health Care Dimensions, Con Agra, Peak Performance, Breadeaux Pizza, Super Saver, No Frills and The Daily Nonpareil. "We plan on having an even bigger event next year at this same time," said Linda Robicheau of the Council Bluffs YMCA. "So mark your calendar now. We'd love to have you back."
