As statewide gas prices hit an average of $4.21 Monday, some may be looking for a more cost-effective way to get to work or school.
A Bike to Work Breakfast event in Iowa City Monday morning looked to encourage people to commute to work using a bicycle. Dozens of people gathered for the event.
For those who work downtown, like Bob Gassman, biking is an easy choice.
“I don’t think I’ve missed a commuter day in over 17 years,” said Gassman.
Gassman and his friend Bryan Ringen are avid trail users and save money by biking. Gassman said he only uses a car once a month and Ringen either takes the free bus or his bike, as he and his wife only have one car.
“I think it’s very sustainable, as opposed to driving a car. Living in Iowa City, we have that benefit,” said Ringen.
Jacob Simmering, an ambassador with Bike Iowa City, said more people naturally commute by bike in the summer, but the economy might add to that trend.
