It’s back to square one for changes to an ordinance governing electric scooters and e-bike’s in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
Tuesday night, city leaders scrapped the second reading of the proposed ordinance, in favor of a fresh start.
Citizens raised concerns about the safety of scooters and e-bikes.
Some parents also had concerns about the proposed changes to city code
Tuesday night, the city council had the second reading of changes to the ordinance.
But, after hearing from several parents and citizens, council members unanimously voted to kill the second reading and use Tuesday’s meeting comments to revamp the ordinance and start the process over with the first reading.
Sergeant Bluff’s mayor says it meant a lot to have so many people voice their opinions.
He said safety is number one.
“Bottom line is safety. I mean it’s a concern how these kids, the young youth are just not obeying the traffic laws,” said Ron Hanson, mayor of Sergeant Bluff. “So yes, it is through the education process.”
Hanson says the existing ordinance is from 2004 and refers mainly to manual bikes.
Parent Alisha Elder says the community was satisfied with the outcome on Tuesday.
She said they felt their voices were heard by the city council.
