With warmer weather bringing cycling enthusiasts out for rides, first responders in Mason City underwent special training Wednesday to ensure they’re prepared for cycling-related emergencies.
Simulation in Motion-Iowa (SIM-IA) is a program administered by the University of Iowa College of Nursing. In partnership with the Mason City Fire Department, SIM-IA’s mobile education truck helped EMTs, paramedics and EMS students receive firsthand response experience through a brand-new simulation scenario.
“They have mannequins, and they’re connected to the system in there, so it has real-time vitals,” Mason City Fire Department’s shift captain Dustin Pillard said. “It is all scenario-based, so they can change it and adjust it and try to get people more comfortable with being able to operate on a call when the time comes.”
