Des Moines Parks and Recreation has received the Iowa Concrete Paving Association’s Award of Excellence for outstanding design and construction on the Karras-Kaul Trail Connector.

The project was named Iowa’s “Best” Recreational Trails PCC Paving Project of 2025, recognizing the craftsmanship, durability, and thoughtful engineering behind this key link in Central Iowa’s trail system.

A Small Connector with Big Impact

While it may seem like just another paved segment, the Karras-Kaul Connector plays an important role in strengthening the greater Des Moines trail network. Connections are what turn individual trails into a true system.

By improving access between neighborhoods, parks, and existing corridors, this project:

  • Enhances safety for cyclists and pedestrians
  • Reduces road crossings and gaps
  • Increases accessibility for riders of all ages and abilities
  • Strengthens long-distance trail continuity

Every well-designed connector makes the network more seamless - and more inviting.

Why This Matters for Iowa Cycling & Tourism

Des Moines continues to build a reputation as one of the Midwest’s most bikeable cities. Strong infrastructure fuels that reputation.

Award-winning trail projects like this don’t just benefit daily commuters and weekend riders - they support Iowa’s growing bicycle tourism economy.

When trails connect smoothly and safely, people are more likely to:

  • Ride longer
  • Stay overnight
  • Stop at local restaurants and breweries
  • Explore neighborhoods and businesses

That’s the power of RIDE. STAY. PLAY.

High-quality trail infrastructure creates experiences. And experiences drive tourism.

A Model for Future Investment

As communities across Iowa continue expanding their trail systems, the Karras-Kaul Connector sets a standard for how recreational trail projects can be built - durable, accessible, and thoughtfully integrated into the larger network.

Congratulations to Des Moines Parks and Recreation, their staff, project partners, and contractors for earning statewide recognition. And congratulations to the Central Iowa cycling community - because you’re the ones who get to enjoy it every day.
