The field of view along the High Trestle Trail on NW 44th Street is drastically different between an upright bike and a handcycle, photos taken by BikeIowa show.

State of play: Corey Petersen, 44, of Ankeny, was riding her hand-pedal recumbent bike on the High Trestle Trail when she was killed by a dump truck driver while crossing NW 44th Street earlier this month.

  • The bike, which is propelled forward using hands, sits lower to the ground than a traditional bike.
  • The road's speed limit is 55 miles per hour

The latest: Her family is petitioning for additional safety measures on the trail, noting the intersection's limited visibility and high speeds.

What they're saying: A crest on the road makes it even more difficult to see traffic, writes Scott Sumpter, founder of BikeIowa.

  • "We believe she was in a split-second 'wrong place at the wrong time' — 1-2 seconds with that lowered sight-line distance is a BIG difference," writes Sumpter.
