An Estherville woman has been sentenced to 60 days in jail in a hit and run accident involving a bicycle in Ruthven last year.

Back on June 9th of 2024 a 5-year-old girl was struck and the motorist left the scene. KICD News was told by a family member that the girl was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital and suffered a punctured lung, bruised liver, injured ankle, and required stitches on her face.

Later that night 23-year-old Laticia Whiting of Estherville was arrested in Spirit Lake and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury, open container, failure to prove insurance, and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Palo Alto County Sheriff John King says Whiting wound up pleading guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and causing a serious injury by motor vehicle.
