NEAR FAIRFIELD, Iowa — A child on a bicycle was badly hurt after being struck by a pickup truck in southeast Iowa.

The accident happened just before 5 p.m. Wednesday in the 1900 block of Pleasant Plain Road northeast of Fairfield.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the juvenile bicyclist was on a bike trail and failed to stop before pulling onto Pleasant Plain Road and into the pickup's path.

The child was rushed by ambulance to Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield and then flown to University of Iowa in Iowa City for treatment of serious injuries.

At this time, the sheriff’s office is not releasing the names of those involved.

The Fairfield Police Department, Fairfield Fire Department and Jefferson County Ambulance assisted at the scene.
