A Kansas City man was killed early Sunday, Aug. 10 when severe storms swept through southwest Iowa.
According to the Shenandoah Police Department, officers were called around 4 a.m. to Sportsmans Park, where cyclists participating in the Rooster Tail Ride had been camping. About 30 minutes earlier, a storm packing severe wind gusts rolled through the area, according to the police department.
Police said 42-year-old Brian Seago died when a small shed he was camping behind was blown onto the tent in which he was sleeping.
The National Weather Service reported “significant tree damage” and minor structural damage across Shenandoah on Sunday at 3:32 a.m., followed by an overturned semi in a retail parking lot minutes later. A 64 mph wind gust was recorded near Essex, just east of town. The agency had issued a severe thunderstorm watch the night before, warning of winds up to 80 mph, large hail and a risk of isolated tornadoes.
