With temperatures rising and headwinds challenging participants, riders in the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) found creative ways to keep cool.

Many sought relief from the sweltering weather by finding shade, diving into water breaks or taking refuge in cooling centers.

“On a day like today, you can’t drink enough water or Gatorade to stay cool,” said Dan Hinz, of Marion, Iowa, emphasizing the importance of having a place to cool down.

Among the resilient participants was a Des Moines woman who, for the first time, committed to riding the full week of the event.

At nearly 60 years old, she reflected on her motivation to tackle the challenge now.

"It was supposed to be easier, and I thought I better get it done now," said Sarah Kinney, pedaling a full week of RAGBRAI.

Riders embraced the unique rhythm of RAGBRAI, putting typical schedules aside to fully savor the community experience.
