The winding saga of the PlyWood Trail continues.

The Le Mars City Council approved a $43,500 payment as part of an addendum to a 2023 agreement with McClure Engineering of Sioux City for construction services on Phase 1b of the PlyWood Trail.

The work is required after the contract was not adhered to by the original contractor, Godbersen-Smith Construction Company of Ida Grove. Godbersen-Smith exceeded the completion date by 43.5 days and has been charged for exceeding the time limit, the council was told. There also were concerns with the quality of its work on some parts of the trail.

The $43,500 payment will cover engineering costs, not the repairs. The money will not come from the City of Le Mars. It’s a “pass-through,” City Administrator Jason Vacura told the council. The Iowa Economic Development Authority will repay the city through a Destination Iowa grant or from the Plywood Trail Executive Committee.

The PlyWood Trail is a concrete path, primarily 10 feet wide, with some sections 8 feet wide. It was designed for bicycle traffic, as well as pedestrian use.
