When the leaves start to turn and the air gains a crisp edge, Iowa cyclists know it’s time for one thing - cyclocross season. Across the state, grassy parks, muddy corners, and makeshift barriers come alive with racers, spectators, cowbells, and cheers. And nowhere is this energy more concentrated than in the Des Moines metro, where a deep-rooted cyclocross community continues to grow stronger year after year.

What Is Cyclocross?

Cyclocross - often called “CX” or simply “cross” - is a form of bicycle racing that blends the speed of road cycling with the technical skill of mountain biking, all on a short, spectator-friendly circuit. Courses feature grass, dirt, gravel, sand, pavement, and obstacles that force riders to dismount, carry their bikes, and remount - all while racing against the clock.

The sport originated in Europe in the early 1900s as a way for road cyclists to stay fit in the off-season, and it quickly evolved into a discipline of its own. Belgium, France, and the Netherlands became international hubs for the sport, but in the last few decades, cyclocross has exploded in popularity in North America, too. Iowa embraced it in the early 2000s, and today, the state boasts a full calendar of races, a thriving community of racers and fans, and venues that rival some of the best in the Midwest.

The Des Moines Metro: Iowa’s Cross Capital

Des Moines is home to some of the most consistent and creative cyclocross events in the Midwest. With dedicated local promoters, supportive venues, and a culture that embraces both competition and fun, it’s no surprise that the metro area has become a hub for CX riders of all skill levels. Whether you’re an elite racer chasing points or a first-timer just looking to try your hand at a lap or two, there’s a place for you here.

At the heart of it all is a grassroots approach - accessible practice sessions, a variety of race venues, and an open invitation for anyone curious about the sport to join in. Cyclocross here isn’t just about winning; it’s about community, camaraderie, and pushing yourself in a supportive atmosphere.

The Renegade Practices: 11 Weeks of Skills, Sweat, and Smiles

Starting August 26, 2025, and running through November 4th, the Renegade Cyclocross Practices return for 11 consecutive weeks of skill-building and fitness tuning. These aren’t just training nights - they’re weekly meetups where seasoned racers and brand-new riders mingle, swap tips, and try new techniques in a low-pressure setting.

With courses set up in different parks around Des Moines, riders get to practice real-world conditions on a fresh course each week: tight turns, off-cambers, dismounts, remounts, and of course, the occasional trip through mud or sand. These evenings are the perfect place to sharpen your race craft - or just enjoy a spirited workout with friends.

First-Timers: Understanding the USA Cycling License

Most Iowa cyclocross races are sanctioned by USA Cycling (USAC), which means you’ll need either:

  • An annual USAC race license

  • Or a 1-day license purchased for each race day you enter

For 2025, new riders can take advantage of a special offer: use the code intromemb25 to reduce the cost of an annual license from $110 to just $50- making entry into the sport far more budget-friendly. At that price, the license pays for itself after about three races compared to buying individual 1-day licenses.

Why Iowa Cyclocross Stands Out

Iowa may not have the mountain passes or sprawling urban parks of other CX hotbeds, but what it does have is a tight-knit, passionate community. The races are challenging, the courses inventive, and the atmosphere welcoming. In Iowa, you can show up to a race not knowing anyone and leave with a dozen new riding buddies.

For the Des Moines metro in particular, the 2025 season promises to deliver 11 weeks of skills training, a landmark Capital City Cross weekend, a dedicated beginner clinic, and a packed statewide calendar that will keep cowbells ringing from late August to early December.

So dust off your cross bike, air up your tires, and get ready - because in Iowa, fall belongs to cyclocross.
