You can help fund the restoration of the Jackson/Fifth Street Bridge (also known as the green bridge) by attending a fund-raising event Thursday, Oct. 8 at Confluence Brewing. All proceeds for this event benefit the bridge restoration, scheduled to take place in 2016.

This steel wagon bridge on the Raccoon River, built in 1898, was an important link to what is now known as the south side of Des Moines. It's located west of Principal Park and about one mile from Confluence Brewery.

The bridge was a key component of the downtown trail network and the Meredith Trail in particular until it closed in 2013. In 2014, the Des Moines city manager's office recommended tearing down the bridge. Fortunately, local historians, bike riders, walkers, and runners came to the rescue—if the local community would donate to do so.

Why the BikeIowa.com community should care: Reopening the bridge restores an important downtown trail connection. The bridge is steeped with history and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

If you appreciate the Des Moines trail network and all the amentiies that have popped up along the trail, please carve out some time in your schedule to attend.

Route

All trails lead to Confluence Brewery! There's a short gravel trail from the south side of Gray's Lake to the brewery patio.
