A 67-year-old Omaha, Nebraska, man died of a suspected heart attack on a fundraiser bicycle ride on the Sauk Rail Trail Saturday.
Charles “Tom” Bridge had nearly finished the ride from Lake View to Breda and back when he collapsed near the Trailside Inn in Carnarvon, which is just south of Lake View, according to Sam Cogdill, a member of RAGBRAI Team Checker who had ridden with Bridge for about 15 years.
“He got to feeling bad,” Cogdill said of Bridge. “He would get overheated and dehydrated, and he had said that’s all it was.
“We assume that he had a heart attack.”
Bridge had been inside Trailside Inn just before he collapsed.
Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure said emergency responders took Bridge to Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City, where he was pronounced dead.
“He passed away ... while doing something he loved with people that he loved, cycling in Iowa,” Bridge’s obituary says. “He was an outlaw, a cowboy, a genuine soul who surrounded himself with friends of the highest quality and character, a family man who lived selflessly yet selfishly enough to feed his inquisitive soul.”
