A Cedar Rapids man who on June 6, took a deputy on a high-speed chase reaching up to 110 mph, then drove recklessly in oncoming traffic, and on a popular bike trail, before attempting to run on foot, is being held on a $1,000 bond in the Bremer County Jail.

In the dash cam video obtained by Waverly Newspapers, the pursuit unfolds.

In Bremer County, Dekota Phillip Newlon, 23, is facing multiple charges, including operating while intoxicated, a first offense; failure to yield to an emergency vehicle; excessive speed; driving with a suspended license and reckless driving. Additionally, Cedar Falls police have charged Newton with second- and third- degree criminal mischief.

Around 7:32 a.m. on Thursday, a Bremer County deputy tried to stop a rental silver Chevrolet Impala, which was driving, southbound on U.S. Highway 218 at 82 mph in a 65 mph zone, west of Waverly.

The deputy caught up with the vehicle, which was traveling at 106 mph.

Ignoring the deputy’s signals to pull over, the driver continued south on Highway 58, and then east into oncoming traffic on East Ridgeway.

Driving through traffic and a massive road construction on Highway 58, the driver kept eluding.

An Iowa State Patrol helicopter, which happened to be in the air when the deputy called for help, directed him, especially in a critical part of the chase, where the driver sped up through a bike trail.

Eventually, the vehicle crashed into a fence at Camping World, an RV dealership in Cedar Falls, and the driver fled on foot, and tried to hide in a camper, and was arrested without incident. In Black Hawk County, Newlon is facing a $15,000 bail.

Bremer County Sheriff Dan Pickett said he is relieved no one was hurt. Black Hawk County Sheriff’s deputies, Iowa State Patrol, Cedar Falls and Waterloo Police were among the agencies assisting Bremer County.
