There are three main governing bodies in Iowa for cycling. One for advocacy and the other two for racing.
Iowa Bicycle Coalition
The Iowa Bicycle Coalition is an exciting organization working to promote Iowa cycling as safe and enjoyable recreation and transportation. The 501(c)(3) non-profit group was launched by bicycling advocates from across Iowa and will unite the voices of road riders, mountain bikers, recreation riders, commuters, and anyone else who prefers a bicycle for recreation and transportation.
The Coalition is bringing change to how kids get to and from school with the Safe Routes To School Program. Coalition staff provide training and support to schools state-wide on encouragement and education programs that help increase bicycling and walking.
The Coalition provides an annual education conference geared towards transportation officials by bringing in a national expert to present on bicycle facility design. The conference also provides sessions for the grassroots advocate to ask for better cycling facilities in their communities.
The Coalition works towards improving the safety of cyclists through safety education, community improvement, and encouragement activities. Our safety education program is based upon the national League of American Bicyclists’ curriculum. We work for implementation of complete streets. We foster encouragement activities such as Bike To Work Week.
Iowa Bicycle Racing Association
The mission of The Iowa Bicycle Racing Association (IBRA) is to grow competitive cycling in Iowa and assist our athletes in achieving sustained success in national cycling competition.
IBRA RACES
We will accomplish this by:
- Assisting in the promotion and support of bicycle races that recognize and honor dedication, sportsmanship and team spirit.
- Assist race organizers with the resources to create safe and challenging events that welcome new racers and experienced veterans alike.
- Provide and promote incentive and educational programs for athletes and officials.
- Maintain a calendar of USAC racing events.
Iowa Mountain Bike Championship Series
The Iowa Mountain Bike Championship Series (IMBCS) is a series of
cross-country mountain bike races held throughout Iowa and nearby in
bordering states.
Each individual event has its own race director and offers its own
awards. The series has a point system in place to award competitors at
the end of the season in their respective race categories. This allows
riders to travel around the state and compete at different venues while
earning points toward a series championship.
IMBCS RACES
Each race, and the series as a whole, offers different levels of
competition. There are beginner (Cat 3) races for those who are looking
for fun or are just new to the sport. Cat 2 Sport and Cat 2 Comp races
provide an opportunity for those looking to move up to new challenges,
and Cat 1 Expert races allow riders to test themselves against the best.
Some venues offer Marathon class races for those who are looking to go
long. Kids races encourage the next generation.
The IMBCS advisory board works to promote, organize, and schedule mountain bike racing in Iowa.
