Why I started Yield to Life
We all travel life's roads. I stand before you to ask for your cooperation in providing safe space for cyclists. When you see a cyclist on the road, please, yield to life.

All about Steve Tilford
Tilford was athletic but didn't gravitate toward team sports. He broke his leg twice in seventh grade - once falling out of a tree, the second time skiing - and fell behind the curve of other kids trying out for football and basketball. But that was in the mid-1970s. The 10-speed craze had hit. more...

Folding Bicycle Backpack Makes Good Use of Gravity
It looks great, but the lack of a seat and functional pedals is disappointing. In reality, the Folding Bike Bag is more like a Folding Scooter Bag. Still, it beats walking—and I would imagine that you could get some pretty good speed going down hills on the hiking trail. more...

Cow knocks over woman on bike, steps on her legs
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — A woman escaped serious injury and refused medical treatment after a cow knocked her down and walked on her legs. Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks ranger Pete Taylor said the woman was riding her bicycle along the South Boulder Creek Trail on Monday when she encountered the cow and stopped to let the animal cross.

Instead, the cow knocked the woman over and stepped on her legs.

Taylor said the woman wasn't seriously hurt. Her name was not released.

The cow had left the area by the time rangers arrived, but other people warned fellow bikers and hikers on the trail about the animal.

Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance vice president Jason Vogel called the incident "odd, rare and random." (source)

Transportfiets race in Bussum, 1933
Bas of www.transportfiets.net, (that's trans-port-feets-poont-net for english speakers) turned me onto this super little video. It's genuine film footage from a 1933 race in Bussum (near Amsterdam) on baker's and butcher's bikes. Back in those days most transport bikes had fixed wheels ("fixies" you young folk) and like all those modern-day urban hipsters on track bikes, these bikes had no brakes either. There's a difference though: A transportfiets weighs an easy 50kg, and that's before it was loaded down with 50kg of meat. The wheels alone weigh a good 10kg each. Can you say mo-men-tum?

Bike Lane That Travels With You

The system projects a virtual bike lane (using lasers!) on the ground around the cyclists, providing drivers with a recognizable boundary they can easily avoid. The idea is to allow riders to take safety into their own hands, rather than leaving it to the city. more...

Bill Would Allow Bicyclists to Legally Roll Through Stop Signs
Idaho has had this law on the books for 27 years with no increase in bicycle-related accidents.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I've heard a complaint about cyclists not stopping at stop signs. I'd have enough money to buy at least one new bicycle, maybe two or three.

And now one Montana lawmaker would like to make this normal behavior legal, just as it has been for 27 years in Idaho more...

Warning! Riding a Bicycle Can Have the Following Side Effects:
If you are thinking about replacing a car trip with a bicycle trip instead, it is important to know the repercussions of that choice. Read further for 8 side effects that your doctor or bicycle salesman may not have told you about.

1) Weight loss
If you are trying to get fat, then cycling might not be right for you. Cycling has been known to deplete calories stored in the body’s fat reserves, thus decreasing the gravitational pull on the affected body.

2) Slowed breathing
Those who cycle regularly have reported more time needed for each breath during both exertion and periods of rest.

3) Dangerously low amounts of stress
Those who commute to work by bicycle have been observed to be void of hostility, which some claim is an important survival tool in today's world.

4) Punctuality
Being able to navigate around traffic, take shortcuts through places where cars can't fit, and choose between both car AND bicycle infrastructure can often leave cyclists bored and twiddling their thumbs, waiting for the rest of their associates to show up at work or when meeting friends for lunch.

5) Caffeine free mental stimulation
Those who cycle often attain natural alertness and thus are unable to justify a delicious morning cup of coffee.

6) Feelings of Invincibility
Those who power their own commute often feel that they can accomplish anything.

7) It can be a gateway activity
Cycling can lead to the curiosity, exploration, and even a dependence on other natural, non-motorized activities.

8) Extreme joy
Regular cyclists often have trouble understanding road rage, and thus often get left out of the popular passtime. Too much smiling can also add laugh lines to the face.

Solar Powered Moof Bike Lights the Way

The Moof bike by Amsterdam-based designer Ties Carlier features a striking tubular form that certainly draws one’s eye, but what really caught our attention was their smart solution to a rather simple problem. Rather than attaching clunky (and easily stolen) led lights to the bike, the design elegantly incorporates two solar powered lamps within the bike itself! more...
