Recycled bicycle inner tubes become bags, wallets and belts!
Recycle your bicycle inner tubes at most bike shops around town so they can be upcycled into cool, usable and useful prodcuts by local Alchemy Goods!

Alchemy Goods in Seattle turns them into "stylish, functional, waterproof bags, wallets, and other accessories." They create the straps of the bags from former seatbelts, found in junkyards. They clean them up and voila!, a sturdy strap for your tote bag!

Cycling in Dubai
No, it's not suicidal, it is actually possible to ride your bike around Dubai. Here's how to do it, and where.

Dubai’s known for many things: glitz, construction, shisha. It is not, however, known for its gleaming cycling paths. Not yet, anyway. According to Wolfgang Hohmann, the owner of Wolfi’s Bike Shop, the RTA has planned the construction of nearly 1,000 kilometres of dedicated cycle paths by 2012. more...

Carbon Fiber Dog Bowl
After decades of designing bikes using exotic materials, Yaeger fell in love with carbon fiber, which is extremely lightweight but tough and sleek. She figured there might be a market for unusual objects made of the aerospace material.

"I just wanted to make stupid shit from carbon fiber," Yaeger joked at the Sea Otter bike show, where she's showing off a new line of city bikes she's designed for Swobo. more...

Ear bitten off in road rage incident
Guffey said Cross, a man he had never met before, then started attacking him.

"He come bum-rushing me and grabbed me like this, and started taking chunks out of my ear and spitting them at me,” he said.

Police recovered some of the pieces of Guffey's ear at the scene, but doctors were unable to re-attach the ear.

Guffey said if he could do it all over again, he would still call out Cross.

"When it comes to kids, I'll get involved,” he said. more...

The Quike: have four wheels, ready to pedal … and pedal
Young, Australian adventurers, Roger Chao and Megan Kerr are planning a 12-month bike ride through Russia and Asia, beginning in April, 2009. But this is no ordinary, sit-right-back, sightseeing tour. The pair plans to pedal from Astana, Kazakhstan, across the Eurasian steppes, sitting side by side on a recumbent four-wheeled bicycle they've fondly named “Quikey” – because it has four wheels rather than two.

As they are traveling alone, they will have to carry all their equipment, including bicycle repair gear, medical supplies, clothing, water and food with them. This means that, at times, they will be expected to haul up to 968 lbs (450 kgs), including their own body weight. The 7,450-mile (12,000-km) journey takes the pair through Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Western China (Xinjiang) and Southern Russia (Tuva).

Design

The quike or Quikey was designed after the couple carefully considered what was needed to deal with the rugged and hostile terrains they would encounter. more...

How Cyclists are Changing American Cities
"Mounted on their bicycles like some new kind of urban cowboys." That's how Jeff Mapes describes the modern–day cyclists. The Oregonian reporter talks about bike advocates, bike–car face–offs, and how more cities are taking bicycling seriously as a form of transportation. Mapes talks about bike culture from Seattle to Oregon to Amsterdam more...

Space Exercise Bike Breaks Down
The zero gravity exercise bike is broken aboard NASA's space shuttle Discovery.

NASA has long known that the muscles and bones of astronauts in space weaken over time since they don't have to work against the pull of Earth's gravity when floating in weightlessness. Aboard the space station, astronauts have to work out about two hours every day to maintain their muscle strength during six-month spaceflights. more...

Bicycle-powered Christmas Tree
Check out this DIY project that will help light up electric bulbs in your home, letting you save not only money in the long run but burn calories as well while at home. Using a '75 Schwinn Exceriser stationary bike, one affixes a fixed magnet electric motor rubbing on the wheel to spin the motor, garnering enough power to light up 110 volt electric bulbs (or Christmas lights as seen here). It produces zero carbon footprint and gives you a good cardio workout as well. We wish more and more people will take up the green challenge in days to come more...
