An Ironman which consists of a 2.4m Swim, 112m Bike, 26.2m Run, a total of 140.6 miles all in one day! Thus – 140 miles for smiles was created. Our mission is to raise enough money to buy 140 lucky children a bike. That’s a new bike for a child for every mile of the race! In addition each child will receive not only a bike, but also a helmet, a bike lock, and a bike safety/instruction course.

This is a far cry from normal bicycle safety guides, which usually tell you little more than to wear your helmet and to follow the law. But consider this for a moment: Wearing a helmet will do absolutely nothing to prevent you from getting hit by a car! Sure, helmets might help you if you get hit, and it's a good idea to wear one, but your #1 goal should be to avoid getting hit in the first place. Plenty of cyclists are killed by cars even though they were wearing helmets. Ironically, if they had ridden without helmets, yet followed the guidelines listed below, they might still be alive today. Don't confuse wearing a helmet with biking safely. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It's better to not get hit. That's what real bicycle safety is about.

Chain Reaction is an established bicycling club located in Dubuque and drawing a active membership of approximately 200 people from the Tri-State area. Chain Reaction was originally formed with a primary interest in mountain biking and has evolved to encompass both road and mountain biking with an emphasis on training and racing. Locally, it is an active part of our mission to promote safe and enthusiastic enjoyment of our sport. Racing members range in age from 9 to 60+ and represent the Club within our entire region; from north of Colesburg, to south of Bellevue and west of Dyersville to east of Galena.
For many years, Chain Reaction has promoted an annual series of races known as The Soul Series. The Soul Series is typically comprised of 6 to 8 races. These are multi-disciplined, from road races to mountain bike time trials. Several of our hallmark events are The Iowa State Road Race Championships, The Eagle Point Criterium and the Blockhouse Roll Mountain Bike Festival. The Chichaqua Valley Trail is part of a proposed 110-mile trail loop that crosses the forested banks and timbered bluffs of the Skunk River. The river got this particular name because local pioneers interpreted the Native American word, "Chichaqua" to mean "skunk." The word actually refers to the odor of the wild onions that once grew along the river's banks.

This trail runs through a number of small communities and a variety of wildflowers can be found along the path. The young trees also growing there form a protective arch from sun and wind. A long, lovely wooden bridge crosses the Skunk River and features pullouts where trail-users can pause to admire the river and its valley.

Signs explaining the history of the Mississippi River and how it is used for work and play will dot Bettendorf’s riverfront trail when it is extended from Leach Park to the Duck Creek Parkway trail head in Riverdale, Iowa, possibly as early as 2009.

The city received a $106,291 grant from the Federal Highway Administration to pay for 80 percent of the project. The city will chip in another 20 percent.

Earth Riders mountain bike club is based in Kansas City. The club was founded in 1992 and has grown to over 100 members. The club actively works to acquire and maintain great places to ride in the Midwest.

The first phase of the trail includes one-third of a mile that will connect the sports complex with a trail built by the city of West Burlington along Division street, according to associate city planner Joe Haley.

"This is part of a citywide trail system that has been talked about for years," Haley said. "It's another important piece of the puzzle, and will allow bikers to travel safely to the RecPlex."

"The second phase of the project will loop around the facility and offer RecPlex users access to playing fields and other areas," Hartman said.

This trail takes users on a tour of city parks and countryside. The diverse landscape includes forest, brush and clearings that afford views of nearby rolling hills. Two major goals Webster County Conservation envisions pursuing are connecting the Fort Dodge trail systems with John F. Kennedy Memorial Park and linking the park and the adjacent Lakeside Golf Course to the city’s water system.

Extending the Fort Dodge Nature Trail an additional five miles via a route that would pass through the Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex is an especially exciting project. It is very much in harmony with the recreational needs of the community.

Friends of the Santa Ana River Trail is a volunteer community group involved in trail safety education, eco-friendly preservation and recreational multi-use of the Santa Ana River Trail system in Southern California. The Santa Ana River Trail spans over 120 miles through Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The trail is one of the largest non-motorized social boulevards in the United States. It is a favorite bicycling route in California.

Demand for hiking and other human powered recreation is growing at a rapid pace. Unfortunately, federal funding for trails and recreation on public lands is not growing nearly as fast. The federal land management agencies require funding increases to enhance natural and cultural resource management and protection, improve visitor services, and strengthen the volunteer partnerships so critical to the protection of trails and trail lands.

Iowa Outdoor Unlimited (IOU) is a group of like minded people who enjoy spending time in the outdoors. We were founded in 2005 and since then have camped, kayaked, canoed, caved, cross-country skied, downhill skied, climbed and done many other outdoor activities. As our name suggests we want to be unlimited in the types of outdoor activities we try. During our first year we had 26 different events and did our best to educate members on those sports. A focus of our group is to band together to teach each other about the great outdoors and outdoor sports. Everyone 18 and older is welcome to join our group. After all we were founded to help people make connections so you never have to go it alone.

Randonneuring: Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.

The Iowa Trails Council is a non-profit organization which is directed and operated by a diverse group of volunteers, all dedicated to preserving natural resources and providing linear open spaces for public use.

The Iowa Valley Bicycle Club (IVBC of Marshalltown) was formed in 1974 to promote recreational bicycling and bicycle safety. From the initial mission, IVBC has been active in programs such as the bike safety rodeo program of the after school Allstars program, donating helmets to children, providing traffic control for the Oktemberfest 10 K run and the Corn Carnival Triathlon, and assisting the Adopt a Highway Program. Through donations it has also aided in the development of the Marshalltown Bike Path and the Discovery America Trail.

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a rising international effort to increase safety and promote walking and bicycling to school through the “5 Es”: engineering, education, enforcement, encouragement, and evaluation. The 2005 SAFETEA-LU federal transportation bill included a new SRTS federal funding source of $612 million over five years for both infrastructure and noninfrastructure reimbursement grants.

We are a group of cycling junkies in central Iowa who enjoy riding trail and road and a little racing. We also have been putting mountain bike races in the Fort Dodge and Webester county area for around nine years.

The purpose of Ken Kifer's Bike Pages is to share what I know about cycling and to encourage others to bicycle as well. Although having a strong philosophical streak, these bike pages include practical cycling information, statistical analysis, personal accounts of long trips and local experiences, photos, and humor. The Mississippi River Trail is a 10-state cycling route in process of development with over 280 miles of trail in Iowa. It travels over 2000 continuous miles between the headwaters of the Mississippi at Lake Itasca, Minnesota and the Gulf of Mexico, winding its way through the states of Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

The Missouri River Pedestrian Bridge is a 3,000 foot footbridge across the Missouri River between Council Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska scheduled to be completed in November 2008.

In May 2006 a final cable-stayed bridge design by Kansas City, Missouri architect firm HNTB was selected for the bridge which is budgeted to cost $22 million and include two 200-foot-tall towers and be 52 feet above the river. Main funding for the bridge is a $19 million federal grant that was awarded in 2000 at the behest of former Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey with state and private funds picking up the rest.

Interest in a landmark bridge across the Missouri River has arisen ever since Omaha and Council Bluffs began replacing their older crossings with girder bridges which do not have towers (most notably the Ak-Sar-Ben Bridge).

The bridge is scheduled to be north of the I-480 girder bridge and would connect Riverfront Place's Lewis and Clark Landing in Omaha to One Renaissance Center in the former Playland Park in Council Bluffs.

Groundbreaking for construction of the bridge occurred on October 26, 2006.

The project is led by the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) in accordance with The NDOR standard Specifications and the Rules & Regulations.

The purpose of the North Iowa Spin Race Team (an affiliate of the North Iowa Touring Club) is to promote good health, friendships and safety while offering competitive cycling to all ages and skill levels in North Iowa. The project begins at the existing hike/bike trail in the northwest corner of Agnes Patterson Memorial Park and will be constructed in the south right-of-way of North 11th Avenue East to East 19th Street North, where it will cross to the north right-of-way of North 11th Avenue East and continue to the East 12th Street North intersection.

The NW 26th Street project/MLK Extension is a proposed north/south traffic corridor. Proponents of the project, including some Polk County Supervisors, city officials, and developers, want a four-lane extension of MLK, Jr. Parkway from Euclid Avenue in Des Moines north to Interstate 35/80, and interchange, and a widened NW 26th Street leading to IA 415 in the Ankeny area.

The Raccoon River Valley Trail is a 56-mile-long paved trail along the branches of the beautiful Raccoon River through Greene, Guthrie and Dallas Counties in west central Iowa. It includes the communities of Jefferson, Cooper, Herndon, Yale, Panora, Linden, Redfield, Adel and Waukee. And, going east, the RRVT connects with the extensive trail system in Iowa’s capital city of Des Moines.



We expect to be adding a 33-mile-long “North Loop,” with much of the work happening in 2009 and 2010. That will include the communities of Dallas Center, Minburn, Perry, Dawson and Jamaica.

The extension of the trail will run from First Street north under U.S. Highway 30 at Deer Creek and end near the new Ross Street bridge and the Toledo City Park trail.

RootRiverTrail.org is a comprehensive directory of businesses and services available on the incredibly beautiful Root River State Trail in Southeast Minnesota. The 60-mile paved trail meanders through 300-foot bluffs along the bucolic Root River. The website features information on all of the communities along the trail and a live webcam located in downtown Lanesboro.

The team continued to grow over the years (and continued to apply stickers in our own special way). In 2003 we got jerseys, which were nice (purple and gold), but other teams had jerseys too. As we were getting ready to take the team picture on the first day Jim Wegener showed up (late as usual), but he carried with him a box that was full of magic. Through exploration and competition this 24 hour team event is designed to provide a challenging athletic experience contained entirely within the boundaries of major cities around the US. It includes a race component as well as several events for spectators.

We have about 190 people in are group. We ride every Thursday night all year. During the summer we Ride the Wabash Trace in southwest Iowa. During the winter we ride the Keystone Trail in Omaha, Neraska. We have hosted this ride over 5 years and still have fun evary week. some call this the Taco Ride. we call it TNR.

TOMRV (Tour Of Mississippi River Valley) - A weekend road tour June 9-10 2007, running from Bettendorf, Iowa to Dubuque Iowa and back the next day. 1,500 riders tour each year. The route is varied and challenging - 105 miles on Saturday and 84 miles on Sunday. An optional start has 40 fewer miles each day. Many rest/food stops are along the route, both tour supplied and local. Equipment support is available on the route and at Dubuque. You overnight in college dormitory rooms, tent, or choose a local motel. Your baggage is transported up to Dubuque and back for you. Entertainment is provided in Dubuque on Saturday night. This is our 30th year for the event. Sponsored by the Quad Cities Bicycle Club. Registration opens Feb 12 2007.

(1) Windsor Heights, Clive, and Raccoon River Valley Trails;

The recommendation calls for a trail head at the corner of 56th Street and Pleasant Drive, then jogging north and following Interstate Highway 235 west to connect with a current greenway and dirt trail that run south along Ronwood Drive, following Cummins Creek.

The project would connect the .7-mile trail with the Walnut Creek Trail to the south and the 56th Street Bridge and bike path overpass to the north. Cost of the project has yet to be determined.
