Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong is scheduled to make stops in Coralville and Iowa City during RAGBRAI, a Lance Armstrong Foundation spokeswoman confirmed Monday.
Armstrong is expected to arrive in Newton on July 26 where he will speak later that evening, Lance Armstrong Foundation spokeswoman Michelle Milford said. Lance is then expected to pedal at least some of the route from Newton to Marengo the next day, Milford said.
On July 28, when RAGBRAI stops in Coralville, Armstrong is scheduled to testify at a United States Senate field hearing in Iowa City on cancer research funding.
The hearing is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, Milford said. After that, Milford said Armstrong is expected to appear at an afternoon RAGBRAI event in Coralville, the last overnight stop along the seven-day, 440-mile ride from Sergeant Bluff to Muscatine.
Armstrong is a cancer survivor who overcame the disease to claim seven consecutive victories in the Tour de France, cycling’s most prestigious race.
RAGBRAI, the oldest and largest event of its kind in the world, begins in Sergeant Bluff on July 23 and ends July 29 in Muscatine. Along the way, there are overnight stops in Ida Grove, Audubon, Waukee, Newton, Marengo and Coralville.
More than 10,000 riders and 3,000 support staff will stop overnight in Coralville on July 28 as they take part in RAGBRAI.
This will be the third time the event will make a stop in Coralville in its 34 years, with S.T. Morrison Park again being the central overnight location. Coralville's RAGBRAI theme is “Iowa’s Midsummer Dream."
RAGBRAI previously stopped in Coralville in 1995 and 2001.
