Bike to Work Day Events

On Friday May 16th join 2,000+ commuters across the state for a clean and healthy commute to work on your bicycle!

  • Bike to the Farmer’s Market, Packet Pick-up
    [Des Moines] 7 a.m. – noon • Downtown
    Organizers of Bike to Work will be at the Downtown Farmer’s Market for registered riders to get their registration packet.


  • “Coolest Bicycle in Town”
    [Des Moines] 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. • El Bait Shop
    Bring your vintage, high performance, dazzling, or just plain unusual bike to the 2nd Annual Coolest Bike in Town (CBT) event at El Bait Shop. ACME International Bike Club is hosting this competition for touring, commuter, fixed gear, recumbent, and vintage style bikes. The official competition categories will be determined by those attending and the celebrity judges.


  • Cyclo de Mayo Poker Rally
    [Des Moines] 12:34 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. • Begins at the Farmer's Market Bike to Work booth
    Cyclo de Mayo is an urban adventure race that will take contestants to checkpoints all over the city of Des Moines. There will be trophies for fastest finishers in several categories and other participation prizes. The race will finish at El Bait Shop with live music by Public Property.

    [Statewide] Ride wherever you are this weekend
    Ride to your local place of worship or help coordinate a ride.

  • Bike with Boswell
    [Des Moines] 7:00 a.m. • 39th and Grand Avenue, ride to 300 E. Locust
    Federal, state, and city policy makers will ride to kick off the work week. The number of riders demonstrates to them how many of us are watching and listening and demanding safer bicycle facilities.


  • Bike To School
    [Statewide] before, during or after school
    Contact your Principal and volunteer to organize a ride at your school all week.

  • Bike Kollective Breakfast
    [Des Moines] 6:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. • 617 Grand Ave
    Stop down, grab a bite and check out the new space called the Des Moines Bike Kollective (while supplies last).


  • Mayor’s Invitational
    [Des Moines] 
    RDG Planning and Design is hosting the metro Mayors to learn about Bicycle Friendly Community status. Guest speaker from League of American Bicyclists. Invitation Only

    [Statewide] businesses all over the state
    Coffee shops all over the metro are offering those who bike and shop great deals. Show you support, because these businesses support us!

  • Bike to Work Day
    [Des Moines] 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. • Downtown YMCA
    Today is the official Bike to Work day. We hope you have been riding all week long in preparation for this day. Go to biketowork.bikeiowa.com for a list of free breakfasts, showers and staging locations. Staging locations are for camaraderie, commuting with friends, and creating a group of cyclists for visibility. Today one lucky registered rider will win the grand CASH prize! Awards will also be announced for the top Two Bicycle Clubs and Employers with the most registered riders.
  • "Potluck" Commuter breakfast
    [Ames] 6:15 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. • Skunk River Cycles
    Coffee, juice, and some bagels/bakery goods will be provided. Free to bring something to share with others that stop in. While supplies last.


  • Handle Bar Happy Hour
    [Des Moines] 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. • El Bait Shop
    Ahh what a week! Celebrate at Handle Bar Happy Hour and win some cool gear. Must be present to win.


  • Afterwork drop-in
    [Ames] 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. • Stomping Grounds
    Afterwork drop-in at Stomping Grounds in Campustown (303 Welch Ave). Stop and share stories of the day and put your name in the drawing for prizes.
