Congratulations to all of you that took the Bike to Work Challenge!
Winners for this year's bragging rights are as follows:
Statewide, our top employers included Rockwell Collins (103), Grinnell College (99), Principal Financial Group (86) and Wells Fargo (81).
Statewide, our top cycling clubs included: Grinnell Bike Club (57), Bow Wow Hot (53), Rockwell Collins Biking Club (42) and Hillis Tire Biters (30).
It is very exciting to see the numbers starting to increase throughout the state! And, there are starting to be more local area planning to get people out for breakfasts, a Ride of Silence and Handlebar Happy Hours - all of which need to be planned locally.
With that said, at the beginning of this year, the website announced several changes for 2010. The biggest change, of course, was that we were not going to be giving away socks this year. The second one was that all prizes would be awarded locally. In the metro area, that means we have identified our commuter and advocate of the year - and the top two employers and cycling clubs to receive recognition. All awards were paid for by local sponsorships or by the communities in Central Iowa.
We are open to suggestion for how this could work differently. However, we ask that you keep in mind that if we want to move forward with a statewide award, we need to develop a statewide sponsor list. Otherwise, it makes the most sense to keep the sponsor funding in the area it is raised.
Bragging rights are still very valuable! And, we hope everyone keeps registering in future years. Your registration MAKES A DIFFERENCE with decision makers - and quite frankly, that is the best award any of us can receive! |

Events have been great this week, even with a little cold and rain on Sunday and Monday. A small but mighty group (about 25) came to the Community Bike Picnic, and about that many came out to ride with Congressman Boswell.
Today we showcased what could be done with one of the 55,000+ parking spaces in downtown Des Moines... we made ice-cream by pedaling a bike... very cool!! Thanks to Irwin's Bike & Sports for bringing the trainer with the ice-cream maker attached (and the great recipes! My fave was the double chocolate!). Think about what your employer/business could do with a parking space next year... yoga lessons, scrabble games, painting class, etc... the sky is the limit.
Bike for Groceries is tonight, Bike Collective Breakfast tomorrow morning, Ride of Silence is tomorrow night, and many staging locations for Friday morning. Check the ride calendar and the staging locations for more details.

You can come to any of our events throughout the month but you must be registered to be eligible for prizes.
This change in registration allows us to track the various types of bicyclists (commuters, recreation, training, etc.) Be sure to talk about registration with all of those people who have never registered for bike to work week... they can register for BIKE MONTH - and be a part of the fun! |

- Congratulations DES MOINES! The opening night of ARTCRANK show on Saturday night was a huge success!!! Over 800 people attended and more than $15,000 was raised. The show continues all through the month at the Instinct Art Gallery. For information on hours go to: http://instinctgallery.com/

NO SOCKS THIS YEAR? True; no socks for the first 500 registered. This program has been a terrific incentive to register. However, many corporations that previously supported Bike to Work Week have pulled back (budget cuts). Ditto for some of the communities that supported. We're working with fewer dollars this year, despite expanding to a month of activities. The socks represented about 20 percent of our budget. Connect the dots—and remember that registration remains free. We're working hard to attract more new riders. |
