BIKE TO WORK WEEK 2007

Bike To Work Week 2007

Welcome to Bike to Work Week 2007!

RECAP
What a GREAT year! Record numbers signed up for Bike To Work Week! 1,415 pledged to Bike To Work sometime during the week! The week's weather was great all except for a little rain on Tuesday (15th) Congratulations to the Prize Winners!

Please read the Bike To Work Recap that showcases all the events with photos and video. Full survey statistics for 2007 are now posted. THANKS to all who participated!

The purposes of Bike to Work Week is to encourage people to try bike commuting, increase cycling awareness and promote a healthy alternative form of transportation.

This marks the 5th year for Bike To Work activities in Iowa. Each year we have grown! We again will celebrate bicycling related events all week long! May 18th is the official "Bike To Work" day.  Please join us each day from May 12th through May 18th for Bike To Work Week!

The 2007 Challenge is to get your employer, friends and coworkers involved. Pass the Employer's Bike Guide to the appropriate contact within your company. YOU may already be a commuter and that's great! Help spread the word!

Register for $1,000 dollars in Bike Bucks! The first 500 to register receive a free prize. Registration is FREE. We ask that you take a short survey that will help us prove public demand to cities and state officals and other organizations to make cycling better in Iowa! For example, the 2004 and 2005 survey results were used to gauge interest for Bike Racks on buses. In the fall of 2005 bus racks were installed on all 100+ DART buses!

Is there a better time to start commuting? Gas is still over $2.00 per gallon! Global warming is in full effect, The interstate is still undergoing reconstruction. There have been many trail improvements and connectors in the metro area and the DART buses continue to have record usage for the bike rack usage each month!  So why no commute by bike?!?  Ever wonder what that bike trail looks like during rush hour?

Bike Teams and Clubs - Get your members involved. Volunteer for a Staging Location, become a 'Supporter' sponsor. Prizes will be awarded for the bike clubs with the most participation!

Think about your Route - Do you know which route you can take into work? Can you get there by existing bicycle trails?

Bike To Work Week events are organized all over the state. Most of the events listed here take place in the Des Moines Metro areas.  If you are from another city in Iowa and have coordinated efforts for Bike To Work Day/Week in your area, we'd Love to post your information too!

Bike To Work Day is a project of Avoid the Rush, The Des Moines Parks & Recreation, The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) and BIKEIOWA.com

Thanks to the Sponsors, the volunteers and everyone else who makes this event a Great Success!
