Description
Picture a beautiful eight
acre fishing lake that will be surrounded by a great lawn for concerts
and games, an open air civic shelter for large gatherings, a picnic
pavilion, smaller shelters, a fishing pier, trails, children’s play
structures that will be handicap accessible, and numerous native
plantings. That is what the city of Johnston has planned for Terra Lake, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway.
Location Maps
Terra
Lake's smallest visitors have started arriving! In late March, the
Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the City of Johnston Parks
Department began stocking Terra Lake with fish. Sixteen breeding-size
largemouth bass were placed into Terra Lake, while bluegills will arrive
in mid-April. The fish will spawn this Spring and provide the start of
a healthy population of fish. We want to stress that fishing is NOT
allowed at Terra Lake until 2017 in order to allow the fish time to
grow. Channel catfish will be added to Terra Lake this Fall.
Phase
II construction begins Spring 2015. This phase focuses on the civic
shelter and plaza near the great lawn, the west perimeter trail
connection, the reconstruction of the regional trail section, the
fishing pier on the east edge of the lake, and the reconstruction of the
Crown Point parking lot. Construction on Phase II is expected to begin
on July 1, with completion scheduled for December. Construction bidding on Phase II will take place in May.
Plans are also in the works for an
addition to the adjacent Crown Point Community Center to add more
programming space for the City's Senior Programs, and to introduce new
outdoor educational and experiential learning programs. In addition,
soft trails will be developed within the adjacent Beaver Creek Natural
Resources Area to accommodate walkers and runners who want to get off
the hard trails. These will double as the perfect spot for
cross-country skiing in the winter!
The Terra Lake Project will tie three
integral areas (Terra Park, Beaver Creek Natural Resources Area, and
Crown Point Community Center) together to create a massive, 200 acre
park that will no doubt be enjoyed by the residents of Johnston and
people from across Greater Des Moines.
The project will be fully completed June 2017.
