Additional news stated the cyclist was not wearing a helmet. Iowa needs one heck of a 'Share the Road' Campaign!] [updated 2-12-05 - Sheriff Baxter continued the investigation involving the fatal accident that occurred on January 25 on Loess Hills Trail. Clyde Loveless, Jr. of Loveland, Iowa was killed while riding his bike. ] A 46 year-old man riding a bicycle was killed after he was struck by a car on Loess Hills Trail (old Hwy. 183), about a mile south of Missouri Valley, Tuesday evening. Harrison County Sheriff Terry E. Baxter said the victim was identified as Clyde Wayne Loveless, Jr., Missouri Valley. Baxter said Loveless was northbound on Loess Hills Trail at about 8:50 p.m. when he was struck by a car, also northbound, driven by Duane Meier, 31, Persia. The report said the bicycle did not have a headlight. Loveless was transported to Alegent Health Community Memorial Hospital, by Missouri Valley Rescue, where he was pronounced as deceased. An autopsy is being performed by the Douglas County Coroner's Office, Omaha, and the accident continues to be under investigation by both the sheriff's department and the Iowa State Patrol, Baxter said. Baxter said an autopsy in such a case is routine.

  • Sheriff's report indicated: No lights, dark clothing, only reflectors on the bike were from the pedals. No indication that the car was speeding (final report not in yet).
  • Sheriff's department received 3 calls in a short amount of time which indicated they almost hit him--the 3rd call was that the cyclist was hit.
  • Bicyclist was traveling near the middle of the northbound lane on Loess Hill Trail Road and was struck near the cars right headlamp.
  • Sheriff said he was wearing dark clothes and was using his bike as his mode of transportation due to a suspended drivers license.
  • Driver of the car was tested for alcohol--nothing. No charges pending.
