This week the Storm Lake City Council approved a grant request for a trail project which would run 3,800 feet of 10-foot-wide, five-inches thick concrete along C49 (south of Walmart), south along a former railroad right of way along the city limit, connecting to on-street trail on 13th Street. City officials feel the trail would improve pedestrian and bike access between residential and business areas. Cost is estimated at $454,000.

If the grant is received, the city’s portion of the cost would be about $173,000, and it would be required to maintain the trail for at least 20 years. Bids would be taken in 2020 with construction in 2021. If the grant is not approved, the city is not committed to the project.

The city applied for the same grant last year and was not approved.
