Ankeny and Des Moines Commuters!

Replacement of the Morningstar Drive bridge over Interstate 80/35 in Des Moines will require closing the roadway to traffic from 9 a.m. Monday, April 3, until late November 2017, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Grimes construction office.

See RED Arrow for location of bridge.

Motorists will be detoured around the closure by using Northwest 54th Avenue, Northwest Sixth Drive, and Northwest Aurora Avenue. The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed...

BIKEIOWA Detour Notes

Cyclists should detour via the Neal Smith Trail. There is a dirt cut-through South of the Interstate and North of Aurora at the bottom of the hill near Saylor Creek. There are no markings, but there are some concrete barriers and folks who fish park there too.

It is unknown whether cyclists coming from Des Moines traveling on NW Morningstar Drive will be able to access the Neal Smith Trail before the interstate. We suspect you will still have access. We will update this post once we know for sure

From the East, We recommend not taking NW 6th Drive as the road is narrow and the traffic count will be increased during the bridge closure.

From the West, Lower Beaver Road should still be easy to navigate as it was re-constructed in the last 2 years and is fairly wide.

If you have other updates, let us know.

RIDE SAFE !
