The recreational trail along Iowa Highway 58 between East 18th Street and Seerley Boulevard is closed as the city prepares for a major sanitary sewer replacement project.

The trail is being closed for construction access, City Engineer Randy Lorenzen said. Contractors will begin removing trees along the trail route. The trail itself will eventually be removed for the project but replaced when completed and new trees will be planted.

Construction crews expect to be working in the corridor 24 hours a day for three to four weeks to prepare for the project, which involves a bore under Highway 58.

The project would replace the existing sewer from 18th Street to Seerley Boulevard, about 3,000 feet. The first phase of construction is to begin this spring.

The entire project would replace and increase the capacity of the 55-year-old, 7,600-foot Dry Run Creek trunk sanitary sewer from Orchard Drive to a new 17th Street lift station.
