A mountain bike group is leading the effort to build more than two miles of dirt trails through wooded land in the eastern Iowa city of Asbury.

The Tri-State Mountain Bike Riders have raised about $50,000 through grants and local contributions for the 2.3-mile trail that will weave through 20 acres of hilly land next to a city park.

"It's going to be like a roller coaster through the woods," said bike group member Randy Vannorsdel. "It will have pumps, bumps and rollers ... to increase your speed and just have an enjoyable time through the woods."

Work has started on the trail, which should be opened next summer. Once completed, riders will have a local option rather than having to travel to Wisconsin, Cedar Rapids or elsewhere for professionally designed, publicly accessible mountain bike trails, Vannorsdel said.

The trails will include berms and banked turns that City Administrator Beth Bonz said would give bicyclists an "adventurous" riding experience.
