DES MOINES, Iowa —A deadly start to the 2016 Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa has Governor Terry Branstad preparing to tackle the problem head-on.

Branstad plans to make bicycle safety a priority in the next legislative session.

“The issues of distracted drivers, drowsy drivers, people under the influence of controlled substances, and we've seen not only an increase in deaths of cyclists, bicyclists, motorcyclists but also motorists,” Branstad said.

It is not just a RAGBRAI problem. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, there have been eight bicycle fatalities this year compared to five in all of 2015.

Bicyclists are taking the statistics to heart.

“It’s kind of scary,” Greg France of Bike World said.
