GLENWOOD, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) --During this year's RAGBRAI, the Iowa Bicycle Coalition is collecting signatures for a petition that calls on state lawmakers to change laws to give cyclists better protection on the road.

"We want to make people aware...laws get changed," said Wayne Fett of Iowa Bicycle Coalition.

"I think it's a good idea. It kind of brings attention to the risk on bikes," said Roger Darnell of Iowa City.

There have been nine bicycle crashes this year, including one that killed 72-year-old Wayne Ezell, of Florida, on Highway 34 near Glenwood. Ezell was participating in RAGBRAI.

The patrol says the pickup driver didn't see the cyclist, which is a growing concern for many riders.

RAGBRAI cyclist held a "Mile of Silence" on Sunday in honor of cyclists killed in crashes.
