CHEROKEE, Iowa

Friends of a Cherokee cyclist who died unexpectedly Sunday morning staged a memorial bike ride Thursday to honor his life.

Norman Needs, known to many as "Chrome Dome" because of the chrome helmet he wore during RAGBRAI (the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa),was found dead late Sunday morning near the intersection of county roads L-51 and L-56 north of Quimby, Iowa. Authorities say Needs, 47, was found on his bicycle in a ditch.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances and cause of Needs' death. Thursday afternoon, Sheriff Dave Scott said the office believes Needs' death was an accident. He said the department has ordered an autopsy from the state, which could take a month or longer.
