DES MOINES, Iowa —It's that time of year when bicyclists hit the roads and trails in Iowa.

One trail, known as “The Loop” along Hickman Road from Clive to Waukee, is becoming increasingly dangerous.

Thousands of cyclists are expected to gather at the Iowa Historical Building in the East Village Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for the “Ride of Silence” to remember those who have been injured or killed while cycling.

Colleen Sengpiel of West Des Moines said she is constantly on high alert while riding through Waukee, and stops at high traffic intersections.

“As a biker, I'm extra cautious,” said Sengpiel.

Police are urging caution after a close call at Hickman Road and Dartmoor Drive sent a bicyclist to the hospital Sunday.

“Witnesses say the driver didn't slow down, the bike wrecked (and) the vehicle took off,” said Waukee police Sgt. Jeff Mellencamp.
