Did you know that Iowa ranks sixth in the nation for bicycle friendliness? That should come as no surprise since we are known for hosting the world’s oldest long-distance bike ride (RAGBRAI) and maintain an extensive system of trails meandering along citiesand the countryside.

Recently the League of American Cyclists recognized the city of Des Moines for its Complete Streets biking initiative, a comprehensive plan that is geared toward creating harmony and safety among all street users. This movement, first launched under the National Complete Streets Coalition in 2004, is also intended to promote development of policies that ensure the support and use of local land, economies, culturesand natural resources.

Sunday marks the beginning of Bike Month, and the greater Des Moines community offers a plethora of opportunities to get moving on two wheels.

Here’s a sample of the first week’s events, sponsored by the Des Moines Bicycle Collective:

  • Iowa Cubs,Pedal to the Park:starts Sundayat Principal Park for every home game
  • El Bait Shop 10-year Anniversary:ThursdayRide to Happy Hour
  • The Des Moines Farmers' Market:Opening Day is May 7;bike valet available 8 a.m. to noon
  • Mother’s Day Ride:May 8,12:45-3:45 p.m. at the Riverwalk Hub

No matter if you’re young or old, a weekend rider or a daily commuter, the Des Moines biking community offers something for everyone. Young biking aficionado Zoey Mauk, 20, enjoys connecting with her city by riding on two wheels.

“The people of the biking community are so helpful and friendly, and it seems no matter what day, timeor temperature, there is always a group ride you can participate in," Mauk said. "I also really enjoy running errands on my bike. The rush you feel after a three-mile ride to the grocery store is amazing compared to hopping in the car.”

Perhaps city and street biking isn’t for you. If so, Iowa offers more than 550 miles of trails that are clean, safeand conveniently located. Des Moines native Tim Rodgers, 43, enjoys cruising on the trails on weekend afternoons:“I stay loose and fit through biking the trails," Rodgers said. "It’s a great way to unwind after a busy workweek and I’m able to see the countryside up close and appreciate the change of seasons. My favorite route is to the Cumming Tap for tacos and a drink.”
