Your story May 19 by Joel Aschbrenner reporting that Des Moines is among the worst in rankings for bike friendliness is
a joke. Bicyclists pay nothing for the use of our streets and byways.
No license required, no insurance required. As a motorist in Des Moines I
must have liability insurance to protect lives and properties. I pay more than $360 a year for my car license plates alone.
Who
pays for those bike trails and painted lines on the streets especially
for cyclists? As a taxpayer, I do. I was recently stopped at a traffic
light, and a cyclist all decked out in the latest cyclist gear
