A man has died three days after crashing his bicycle on a recreational trail in the northeast Iowa city of Decorah.

Dan Werner, 66, died Sunday, said Decorah Police Chief Bill Nixon. Werner was injured Thursday afternoon when he flipped over his bike handlebars.

Nixon said Werner's bicycle crashed after it made slight contact with a woman he was passing on the Trout Run Trail, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier said.

Werner was taken to an area hospital and then flown to St. Marys hospital at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

"There was nothing to suggest he was operating recklessly," Nixon said. "It's an unfortunate set of circumstances that occurred through no particular fault of anybody. Nobody was negligent," he said.

Crash Date: 9/18/14
