Des Moines Metro-area bus riders set a record last month, when the bike racks on buses were used nearly 7,000 times.

The racks on Des Moines Area Regional Transit buses were used 6,996 times in August, according to the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Bicycle and Pedestrian Roundtable. That is up from 2012, when the racks were used 5,952 times.

Historically, August is the heaviest-use month for the DART bike racks.

As Carl Voss of the Des Moines Bicycle Collective points out. "Some of you may recall that when the MTA sought federal funding for the bike racks in 2005, the staff projected 7,145 annual usages. Now, we see those numbers in ONE Month!"
